I had nearly finished the second round of pre-polishing when the lap grabbed the stone and exerted so much torque on it as to cause the shank of the dop on the pavilion side to fracture nearly clear through and bend approximately 15 degrees! I was lucky that the stone was not yanked completely from my hand and flung and smashed against the side of the cast metal splash pan on my faceting machine. D'oh!) By the time I got C1 properly flattened it had become overly wide, so it was back to recut the entire crown. (After all, the "rough" was a molded gemstone. After cutting and prepolishing the rest of the crown side facets, I discovered the surface of the pre-existing table was nowhere near flat enough to polish. The first complication was caused by being lazy and using the pre-existing table of the glass gemstone as a "prepolished" surface for the C1 facet. My target size for the prototype Soda Bar 19 was 60mm in length, but several complications during its cutting resulted in a 55mm x 34mm finished stone weighing 250 carats. More is better here for some insurance in the event you encounter problems requiring recutting like I did.īigger Stones = Bigger Fun but can also involve bigger problems. 770 to ensure you will have adequate material remaining to complete the stone after transfer. Verify that your blocked out stone has sufficient height (H), which should be at least a fat tad over W x. I suggest blocking out the stone width (W) first and then the length (L), which should be made equal to W x 1.613. After some initial trimming down and preforming of the glass gemstone on my 6" trim saw, I decided to dop the existing pavilion in a 1" cone dop and cut the crown side first. These inexpensive molded glass gemstones are manufactured in China and are available in 40mm through 120mm sizes in various colors through the Cutting Rocks web site. The prototype Soda Bar 19 was re-cut from an 80mm SRB pattern gemstone molded from ordinary soda-lime glass. The C6 "girdle" facets may be considered optional on exhibition sized stones, but I incorporated them in the design to facilitate channel or tension mounting of jewelry sized versions. Because I designed and cut Soda Bar as an exhibition stone I was unconcerned with mounting it in a jewelry setting. This geometry is achieved by foregoing a conventional girdle all around the perimeter of the stone. The barrel shape of Soda Bar is generated by the intersection of the arched crown facets with the angled plane of the P1 facets. While this design utilizes only 19 facets, the overall effect belies the relative simplicity of the cut and provides a paradigm example of a sum exceeding its parts. This opposed bar arrangement produces a highly dynamic checkerboard pattern that shifts and dances with slight changes in perspective as the stone is viewed. Soda Bar 19 is a step cut, "opposed bar" type design, employing bands of parallel bars arched across the crown oriented at right angles relative to parallel bars on the pavilion. I designed and cut Soda Bar 19 as a large exhibition stone and my 2009 entry for synthetic division of the "Most Beautiful Stone" competition held during the annual Tucson Show Faceters Hobnob, hosted by Tucson's Old Pueblo Lapidary Club. 234Wĭownload PDF format printer friendly cutting instructions: ĭownload the GemCad format design file: Winner 2009 OPLC Hobnob "Most Beautiful Stone" Competition - Synthetic Division Thanks! If you automatically draft payments from these accounts, be sure to update the information with those companies. Step 2: Close the affected accounts - Close any bank and credit accounts affected by identity theft.A police report is also helpful when you contact your creditors about the ID theft. Step 1: File a police report - This step triggers helpful federal and state protections. If you discover that your identity has been stolen, you should take the following steps to protect yourself: Steps for ID theft victims to take to protect their identity This estimation is based on the amount of work needed to follow the necessary steps to ensure the victim is not responsible for the debt incurred. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) estimates that it can take approximately six months and 200 hours of work to recover from an identity theft. The study highlights that 50 percent of consumers found the fraud themselves by monitoring their bank accounts, credit card statements and credit scores and by purchasing In 2012, a bank or credit card issuer alerted consumers of the identity theft. It often takes a financial and emotional toll.Īccording to a source, financial institutions and credit monitoring service companies are becoming better at catching identity fraud. Having your identity stolen can be an overwhelming experience. One might even be able to hear the “otter whistle… his mate.” The air would be cooling off for the day and the animals would be as relaxed as possible. In the next stanza, the speaker discusses what happens if one “enter the woods” on a “summer evening late.” One could slip into this area that is seemingly off-limits while no one is watching. You will hear the beat of a horse’s feet, When the night-air cools on the trout-ringed pools The keeper has access to a new secret world no one else can see. There is an element of jealously between the speaker and this keeper. They feel as if they are able to continue on with their lives. Their position allows them to see the “badgers roll at ease.” The animals are comfortable with this person. This person sees the “ring-dove” brooding or preparing to sit and incubate eggs. The keeper is now the only one who is able to see beyond the surface level of the woods. There is no real definition of what their job is but one can assume they have access to all the wildlife that has since come back to the area. The speaker refers to the “keeper” vaguely. In the next lines, the speaker refers to the “keeper.” This person is likely the one in charge of monitory the area. There is a contrast here between the way that humans have worked the land, abandoned it, and then worked it again, and the way nature is trying to take it back. One would also be forced to go around the “anemones.” This word is wide-ranging and refers to an expansive genus of flowers. It can also refer to a type of common shrub that grows wild. Now, if one was searching for it, they would have to go “underneath the coppice and heath.” Here, the speaker is referencing a wooded area that is annually cut back to stimulate growth and “heath,” or the opposite. Trees have been planted and grown up around the path, helping to obscure what was left of the path. If one was to come upon this place now, unaware of the history, they would not know that there was “once a road through the woods.” Nature has taken back the area that humans had claimed. Since the time the road was closed the “Weather and rain” have ”undone it.” Due to the fact that it wasn’t maintained, the elements have almost erased it entirely. Although seventy years have passed since anyone was able to traverse this path the speaker remembers it well. The poem begins with the speaker stating that one particular road was “shut…Seventy years ago.” This first line is spoken as if the reader already has prior knowledge of the road. Kipling’s speaker concludes the poem by describing all the things that one might see if they were to enter the woods at night.Īnalysis of The Way Through the Woods Stanza One The keeper is able to see the secret interactions of animals and exist among them freely. In the next lines, the speaker discusses the “keeper” of the woods and what this person has access to that he does not. The entire area has been reclaimed by nature. It was seventy years ago that “they” got rid of it, Since that time there have been new trees planet and exponential growth from the plants that still lived there. The poem begins with the speaker stating that there used to be a road in the woods here. ‘The Way Through the Woods’ by Rudyard Kipling describes the changes that have come over one particular plot of forest. The speaker appreciates this fact, but the text still speaks to a yearning to see the woods first hand. They no longer remember or fear the “men” that used to travel the path. Trees have been replanted and animals have returned. On the other hand, the closure has caused a resurgence in the surrounding life. With its disappearance, one no longer has access to the beautiful moments and creatures that exist within the forest. On one level he is mourning the loss of the path. When reading this piece it is easy to sense a conflict in the speaker. The same occurs between “trees” and “anemones” in lines six and eight. There are also moments such as that between lines two and four where the words “ago” and “know” rhyme. This can be seen through the repetition of the end word “woods.” It appears at the end of seven of the twenty-five lines. Instead, there are instances of rhyme scattered throughout the lines. Kipling has chosen not to structure this piece with one particular rhyme scheme. ‘The Way Through the Woods’ by Rudyard Kipling is a two stanza poem made up of one stanza of twelve lines and another of thirteen. Rather oddly, and the opposite of Nintendo's standard approach, this title doesn't offer much help, either. This is an issue in context, as Wii Sports is a brand representative of simple fun, whereas this is challenging, relatively complex fun. Yes, players can learn as they go and improve, but such is the nature of golf that this demands patience and persistence, and you may have been on the course for an hour or two before you start to master the intricacies of play. We did see - as mentioned earlier - one example online of a player tricking the title with short swings of the wrist (as evidenced by his Mii's motions) yet that seems very tough to do accurately. The issue, perceivably, is that it'll make this all-but-impossible for some that are either not familiar and skilled with the technology, have no idea how to swing a golf club, or both. That accuracy is a strength and a weakness. This feels like a more legitimate, accurate representation of golf than its Resort predecessor, so achieving a top score is a satisfying moment. This is impressive work from Nintendo, showing how its Remote Plus technology, aligned with the GamePad, can further enhance the experience. In the case of everyone who played this for the purpose of this review, the outcome was the same - an initial round was typified by a struggling performance, before a second round showed the player naturally learning and adjusting their technique. In this reviewer's case that exposed some shoddy technique early on, but the literal interpretation of keeping your eye on the ball and then following it once hit - in this case focusing on the GamePad and naturally swinging into viewing the outcome on the TV - never got old. The effect is the game laying down the challenge to hone your technique, keep a straight wrist and play golf properly. You set your stance and, when ready, use B to centre your remote - at this stage a virtual golf club appears on the GamePad screen and it not only gauges power, but gives you a greater real-time visual indicator of the angle of the club head and, impressively, where you struck the ball. The controller is placed on the floor and represents a virtual look onto the course, with your ball resting in the middle. Not only does this version employ the Wii Remote Plus accuracy like the golf in Wii Sports Resort, but utilises the GamePad impressively, in what is possibly its stand-out application to date. No, this needs to actually be played like something resembling real golf.Īnd it's impressive from that perspective. It's possible, in theory, to dupe this one with waggle while lounging on the couch, but the likelihood is that your shots will ping off into the rough or out of bounds. It's accessible in the sense that anyone can pick up a Remote and copy what the players do on TV, and it has basic visuals by modern standards yet the technology is not as primitive, and this new entry demands more of each player. Wii Sports Club: Golf, on the other hand, is the polar opposite in almost every way. The technology was primitive, as were the visuals and mechanics, but it was immediately accessible and fun which, ultimately, was all that mattered. You could get into the spirit of it and swing the Remote like an actual club, sure, but it was almost as easy to slouch in a chair and waggle your arm for the same effect. Golf in the original Wii Sports was, in the context of the sport being represented, a rough and tumble affair. Perhaps unlike its contemporaries to date - Bowling and Tennis - this is the first of the new download-only series that feels like an entirely new experience, rather than a slightly better-controlled tweak of the pack-in phenomenon on Wii. It seems slightly odd that, nearly two-and-a-half years after it made an appearance in the big reveal of Wii U at E3 2011, we now finally get to play Wii Sports Club: Golf. Most nutritionists consent that the Paleo diet gets at least one thing right-cutting down on processed foods that have been highly modified from their raw state through various methods of preservation. Most recently, in her book Paleofantasy, evolutionary biologist Marlene Zuk of the University of California, Riverside, debunks what she identifies as myths central to the Paleo diet and the larger Paleo lifestyle movement. Critiques of the Paleo diet range from the mild-Eh, it's certainly not the worst way to eat-to the acerbic: It is nonsensical and sometimes dangerously restrictive. Instead, their diet is largely defined by what they do not do: most do not eat dairy or processed grains of any kind, because humans did not invent such foods until after the Paleolithic peanuts, lentils, beans, peas and other legumes are off the menu, but nuts are okay meat is consumed in large quantities, often cooked in animal fat of some kind Paleo dieters sometimes eat fruit and often devour vegetables and processed sugars are prohibited, but a little honey now and then is fine.Īlmost equal numbers of advocates and critics seem to have gathered at the Paleo diet dinner table and both tribes have a few particularly vociferous members. Most Paleo dieters of today do none of this, with the exception of occasional hunting trips or a little urban foraging. Before agriculture and industry, humans presumably lived as hunter–gatherers: picking berry after berry off of bushes digging up tumescent tubers chasing mammals to the point of exhaustion scavenging meat, fat and organs from animals that larger predators had killed and eventually learning to fish with lines and hooks and hunt with spears, nets, bows and arrows. Proponents of the Paleo diet follow a nutritional plan based on the eating habits of our ancestors in the Paleolithic period, between 2.5 million and 10,000 years ago. Ostensibly, Grok is "a rather typical hunter–gatherer" living before the dawn of agriculture-an "official primal prototype." He is the poster-persona for fitness author and blogger Mark Sisson's "Primal Blueprint"-a set of guidelines that "allows you to control how your genes express themselves in order to build the strongest, leanest, healthiest body possible, taking clues from evolutionary biology (that's the primal part)." These guidelines incorporate many principles of what is more commonly known as the Paleolithic, or caveman, diet, which started to whet people's appetites as early as the 1960s and is available in many different flavors today. He is perfectly suited to his environment in every way. Yet, somehow, he is a stress-free dude who always manages to get enough sleep and finds the time to enjoy moments of tranquility beside gurgling creeks. Between foraging, building sturdy shelters from natural materials, collecting firewood and fending off dangerous predators far larger than himself, Grok's life is strenuous, perilous and physically demanding. They gather wild seeds, grasses, and nuts seasonal vegetables roots and berries. He and his family eat really healthy, too. By every measure, Grok is in superb health: low blood pressure no inflammation ideal levels of insulin, glucose, cholesterol and triglycerides. According to his online profile, he is a tall, lean, ripped and agile 30-year-old.
